Having been a diehard Spongebob fan my entire life, I had to go see the new movie Sponge Out of Water. The first movie was a tough act to follow, it was an intense tale that left me giggling for days. So with this movie, I wasn’t expecting much. I didn’t want to set the bar too high and be disappointed. But really, a classic cartoon like this never disappoints. I got a lovely, perfectly silly movie that was undeniably Spongebob Squarepants.
This movie did exactly what it should; made me laugh. It had the same quick and goofy humor that you’ll find in every Spongebob episode. I found that it was a little slow moving, and somethings were unexpected. The sponge didn’t go out of water until the last maybe 40 minutes of the movie. But that’s getting ahead of things.
The conflict of the movie is the same old story. However, I still, and probably will always love that story. The Krabby Patty secret formula has been compromised, but this time, not because of Plankton’s scheming. It started out with him trying to steal it from the vault and nearly succeeding. Then, when he’s at a tug of war for the recipe with Spongebob, it vanishes right before them. Without the recipe, Spongebob can’t make any patties for the growing line of customers. This lack of Krabby Patties, understandably, causes an outrageous explosion of rioting & madness in Bikini Bottom. The city blames the two of them for the absence of the recipe, so Plankton & Spongebob escape the city via bubble, and watch as Bikini Bottom falls apart. With the whole city turned against them, they must solve this mystery, find the recipe, and try to save the day.
After teaching Plankton a much needed lesson about teamwork, singing a uniting song, and breaking into a German-Mexican restaurant, they get to work on a plan. They decide to go back in time, get the recipe before it poofs away, and return to Bikini Bottom victorious. They end up doing so, but they bring back the wrong recipe. The one they grab was actually a nasty note that Plankton had left for Mr. Krabbs. So with that, the journey begins again to get the formula back. Just then, Spongebob smells Krabby patties. He and the town follow the scent all the way to the surface. After a magic dolphin named Bubbles grants them the power to breathe out of water, the primary characters decide to follow the scent out into the world.
After turning into fantastic superheroes, and enduring an intense & prolonged battle with a pirate named Burger Beard, the secret formula is saved by an unlikely hero; Plankton. Though he had the formula in his possession after the fight, he decided to hand it over to Krabbs, after realizing he’s lived his life acting only on his own wishes. Plus, if he had the formula, life would just be boring. It was quite the plot twist, Fangirls.
I thought this movie was wonderful. Perfectly funny, engaging, and full of bubbles. The real star of the show, though, was the music. The movie featured a soundtrack from N.E.R.D, aka Pharrell Williams’ band. The songs were actually amazing, super catchy & extra silly. The soundtrack even included a love song all about Sandy. That, without a doubt, is my favorite.
You can always count of Spongebob Squarepants for a great laugh, and this movie was no exception. It lives up to the hype, and was certainly $10 well spent. Go see the movie, buy the soundtrack, and like me, adore Spongebob no matter your age.
